The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Human Settlements led by MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Sipho "KK" Nkosi and Amajuba and uMzinyathi Districts Acting Director Stanley Ngobese today Monday 04th March 2024 conducted an Operation Siyahlola on two rental housing projects situated within Newcastle Local Municipality and also held a community engagement meeting on the problems afflicting the H39 Housing Project. The two rental housing projects are the Hospital Road Social Housing Project and the N11 Community Residential Unit (CRU). MEC "KK" Nkosi was also joined by the Implementing Agent (Main Contractor) of the two rental housing projects Mr Madoda Vilakazi and Departmental Rental Housing official Luzuko Tapula. The anticipated yield of the Hospital Road Social Housing Project is approximately 1 000 units whilst the N11 CRU Housing Project us expected to yield about 600 low cost affordable rental. The two rental projects are within walking distance to the Newcastle Central Business District as well as the nearby industrial estate along the major arterial N11 route to the neighbouring Mpumalanga Province. With respect to the problems afflicting the implementation of the 1 000-units H39 Housing Project, a community engagement was appraised that the Newcastle Local Municipality had to expedite the bringing in of the new contractor to start continuing with the building of the houses for eligible beneficiaries as well as also investigate the alleged corruptive practice of interfering with the beneficiary administration.
